ok.. so in the past, our smart ancestors needed all those teeth. as one of my colleagues has said, they needed to chew hard food and be crunching on those bones, meat and so on. but that's not it although they had large jaws (which in due time and evolution shrinked) they also didn't have toothpaste!!! so, their teeth would decay in time, and they would do anythg to get rid of those ones that pained them much (like bang it to a tree so that it falls, and or chew on a large apple so that tooth is stuck on it, w/o going to doctor to fix a small decay. so they would end up losing most of their teeth at the age of 18. but that was ok for they would have extra fantastic 4 to the rescue.

now, since we have toothpaste, and dentists and loads of other stuff to protect our teeth, our jaws shrunk and we were in all ways cooking food and not crunching on big nuts like desperate fools, rather use special tools to break nuts & so on. so, we proected our teeth, and eventually we don't need those extra four... which are a surplus extra by all means, and they would hurt our mouth when they come out... so BYE BYE ADDITIONAL MOLARS! OUCH!

OK, this is the short answer. Used to be that our jaws were much bigger and stronger a few hundred thousand years ago because we needed them that way due to the foods we were eating, lots of seeds, nuts, meat etc. Stuff that was not softened up by modern mechanical means like roasting, boiling, microwaving. Most things we eat now to survive on are much easier to chew, hence our jaws do not need to be so large and strong, soo our jaws started getting smaller, part of this comes in with allowing more room for cranial capacity (the muscles for your jaw go all the way to the top of your head) too. Since our jaws are getting smaller, we don't have as much room for those big teeth that we used to need to Crunch up all our food. That is way they often are removed, there is no room for them anymore...

in a related item, when I was a child we had a milkman who had 8 wisdom teeth! Crazy

From the need to apply enough force to crack bones to get at the marrow inside.

it actually goes further back than that, now that we're evolving, our mouths have become smaller and many are forced to pull them out!
