ok i have biology homework on protein and could do with some answers cause im just not getting it.
the questions are:

1. What are the four main chemical elements which are always found in proteins?

2. Which other elements are sometimes found?

3. Proteins are polymers. What is meant by a polymer?

4. What are the constituent molecules which make up all protein molecules called?

5. How many different types of these smaller molecules are commonly found in proteins?

6. All amino acids have two chemical groups in common. What are these two chemical groups?

7. Draw the general structural formula for an amino acid.

8. What type of chemical reaction results in amino acids being linked together?

9. Between which chemical groups does this reaction occur?

10.Which two atoms are linked by the resulting bond?

11. What is the name of this type of bond?

12. Draw the general structure formula for a dipeptide.

13. What is the name given to the molecule which consists of a long straight chain of amino acid molecules joined together in this way?

14. Which groups will be found exposed at each end of the chain?

15. What is meant by the primary structure of a protein?

16. What are the two types of secondary structure called?

17. What type of bond maintains this secondary structure?

18. Fibrous proteins have a secondary structure consisting either of parallel alpha or beta pleated sheets. Give examples of fibrous proteins.

19. Some polypeptide chains assume an irregular, yet specific globular shape. Give examples of globular proteins.

20. The shape assumed is determined by the position of the sulphur containing amino acids in the polypeptide chain. What would be the effect on the tertiary structure if the primary structure was altered?

21. Apart from the nature of their shape, in what other ways do fibrous and globular proteins differ?

22. What types of bonds maintain the tertiary structure?

23. What relationship does the quarternary structure bear to the secondary and tertiary structures?

24. The red pigmant in blood is a protein with a quarternary structure. What is this protein?

25. It is also known as a conjugated protein. What is meant by a conjugated protein?

If you can only answer some questions it will still help a great deal! Thank you in advance :P

also please answer asap xxx

1) Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen

2) Sulfur

3) A substance made up of many smaller subunits joined together

4) Amino Acids

5) 20

6) Amino Group and Carboxyl Group

7) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AminoAcidball.svg

8) Condensation Reaction

9) Carboxyl group of one amino acid with Amino group of next

10) Carbon and Nitrogen

11) Peptide Bond

12) http://www.revisionworld.co.uk/files/dipeptide.jpg

13) Polypeptide

14) Amino Group at one end Carboxyl Group at the other.

15) The amino acid sequence itself.

16) The three dimensional form of local segments of the protein into sheets or helices for example

17) Hydrogen Bonds

18) Kerratin, Collagen

19) Haemoglobin, Insulin

20) Different primary structure would change the position of amino acids with sulfur containing side groups, this would change or disrupt disulfide bridges in the protein altering the 3 dimensional structure.

21) Their solubility - fibrous proteins very insoluble, globular proteins largely soluble

22) Disulfide bonds, Hydrogen bonds, Ionic Bonds, Hydrophobic interactions, Van der Waals forces

23) ?

24) Haemoglobin

25) A conjugated protein is a protein attached to another functional molecule. With Haemoglobin the protein is attached to an iron containing group called haem for instance.

Sorry I couldn't answer question 23... odd question.

The quaternary structure refers to the way in which 2 or more polypeptide chain (each with their individual secondary and tertiary structures) interact. As such the secondary and tertiary structures play a role in developing the eventual quaternary structure. Specifying what that relationship is though is... difficult?

1. C , H, O , N

2. There is Sulphur in 2 very common types of amino acid

3. A polymer is a Molecule that contains a repeating unit.

4.Amino acids

5. I think there is about 20 odd but not sure.

6.Carboyle Group and an Alkyle Group

7. Please dont make me ? google it :)

8.Same as every Reaction its Condensation

9.OH-H

10. Not quite sure but you get an C-O-C

11. Peptide bond

12. Please?

13.Protein

14.?

15.Primary Structure relates to the SEQUENCE of amino acids

16.Beta Pleated Sheet and Alpha Helix

17.Hydrogen Bonds

18. Collagen is a scleroprotein. ( ''fibourous protein'')

19. All Enzymes , Some antigens. Etc

20. The entire shape of the protein

21. Surface area i am not sure why they would ask that ? They have different uses but thats relating to shape !

22. Disulphide Bridges.

23.Not to sure what is meant but to help a quarternary structure is a combination of 2 of more Polypeptide chains linking. E.g Haemoglobin is 4.

24.Haemoglobin. haha weird.

25.Mixed with some non organic compounds for example human Hb contains Iron. Thats why its Red.
