Across the region, women are disproportionately affected by HIV. Women and girls make up almost 57% of adults living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Overall, three quarters of all women with HIV worldwide live in this region. On average, there are 13 women living with HIV for every 10 infected men and the gap continues to grow. These women pass it on to their babies. In most countries, women are being infected with HIV at earlier ages than men. There are alarming reports of girls and women being raped and infected that way. Young women (aged 15-24) are bearing the brunt of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent population-based studies suggest that there are on average 36 young women living with HIV, for every 10 young men. Many people who are infected are completely unaware of it. Prostitution is endemic and many of the women involved are infected and spread the disease among men who pass it on elsewhere, all too often, regrettably, to their wives. While there is a great, great lack of health care at any level and while there is an atmosphere of lawlessness, with infected men raping women with impunity and spreading the disease, then things are bound to get worse.

Especially education about sex. So even though the awarness of AIDS is there, knowing how to prevent it and having the money to prevent it, isn't there

I watched a special on television last week on this very subject.There are many different tribes of people in Africa,but they all have one thing in common-they are all extremely poor.They have no means to feed their starving children,let alone themselves.The mothers sell their bodies just to get enough money gathered up to feed their children for the day,and many mothers do without to see that each child gets a small portion of food . The men of the tribes send their wives and daughters out to prostitution for the same reason,to get money for food.They didn't even know there were such things as condoms,but the woman leading the interview with these people showed them condoms,explained whay they were for,and asked if they would let their wives and daughters use them.They said yes,because they were heartbroken at the loss of so many loved ones due to the prostitution and the spread of AIDS.They didn't want their women selling their bodies,but they felt they had no choice.There aren't any jobs for the men,so it was up to the women to save them.But the repercussions were getting AIDS and passing it on tho others and the unborn children that inevitably comes from having sex without protection.My heart breaks for them and for the little girls in the tribes that will one day have to sell their own bodies to feed their families.It is a cruel cycle that will continue unless another way is found to feed and clothe these poor unfortunate people.

It attacks the immune system, so unfortunately without health care, and decent living conditions, and food, many people who contract it probably can't live with the disease like many westerners can.

It is hard to answer this question because it is so easy to give general answers about Africa and AIDS and blanket statements about what could have contributed to this epidemic when we aren't there, and we don't really know what's going on from an insiders perspective.

Partly because their healthcare system is pooer than other continents. Partly because AIDS is said to have begun in Africa



But mostly because their is poor education about sexual health, especially the use of condoms. Sex Education is one of the big, big issues facing Africa at the moment, but there is a very big hesistancy among a lot of inhabitants to use condoms. Let alone having the means to supply all of the needed condoms.

The lack of proper medical faucilites throughout the contienent probably play a huge part. As well as the underdeveloped educational system in place. It is the birthplace of man, but still remains that to this day.

The African men refuse to use condoms. Condoms are handed out at schools and they are free of charge at clinics hospitals all over SA. The people in SA all know of the dangers of diseases , years ago they had programs on the use of condoms but the African people refused to use them saying that the white people just want to stop them from having children. Their are signs all over SA warning People to use condom with signs like this "Dont be a fool, put a condom on your tool". Huge signs written in zulu, xhosa and English.

also since breatfeeding is so essential there there is alot of mother to baby transfer.. transfer rate is 1/5 when breast-feeding but can drop to 1/100 when not.
